STARTING AND DRIVING PROBLEMS

Car starts then dies

The buyer question: "car starts then dies"

HOW SERIOUS IS IT?

Treat repeated stalling as a loss-of-control risk. Do not keep driving if it stalls in traffic, at intersections, or while turning. Arrange professional help.

01

What could cause it

More than one problem can cause the same symptom. These are places to inspect, not a diagnosis.

  • Fuel pressure or fuel-delivery problems
  • An engine-speed, air, ignition, or idle-control issue
  • A charging-system or battery connection problem
  • An immobilizer or security-system condition
02

Safe things to check

Keep clear of moving parts, hot components, and traffic. Use the owner's manual for vehicle-specific instructions.

  • Record whether it dies immediately, after warming up, or when accessories are switched on
  • Check for warning lights, fuel smell, smoke, or unusual noises
  • Do not repeatedly restart it in traffic or near moving vehicles
STOP DRIVING / STOP THE TEST DRIVE

Stop driving when the engine stalls repeatedly or the car loses power in a way that affects steering or braking assistance. Move away from traffic and arrange a tow or qualified assessment.

03

What a mechanic may check

A mechanic may capture live data during a cold and warm start, test fuel and ignition, check charging voltage, scan security and engine modules, and reproduce the stall safely.

04

If you are considering this car

A warm test drive may not reveal a cold-start stall. Ask to start the car cold, let it reach temperature, and have an independent technician inspect it before you proceed.

Questions for the seller

  • Does it die immediately, at idle, under load, or after warming up?
  • Has it ever stalled while driving or needed a jump-start?
  • What diagnostic work and repairs have already been performed?
